How to Unclog an Insinkerator

Save

An Insinkerator is a garbage disposal that helps to cut down on the amount of household garbage by grinding up organic content and flushing it down the waste pipes. One of the most common problems that occur with Insinkerators is that they become clogged with debris and large food items. These clogs must be removed manually before you can use the Insinkerator again. In addition, clogged Insinkerators may block dishwasher waste lines as well as create an unpleasant odor as the food decomposes.

Things You'll Need

  • Flashlight
  • Tongs or pliers
  • Hex wrench
  • Ice cube
  • Broom handle
  • Stop the motor of the disposal by flipping the wall switch down. You will know that the motor is off when you no longer hear a humming sound.

  • Hold a flashlight over the sink drain and point it into the Insinkerator hole to see if there are any visible items clogging the disposal.

  • Insert a pair of tongs or pliers into the hole and grasp any objects that you see.

  • Open up the cabinet door under the sink and lie down on your back so that you can see the bottom of the Insinkerator disposal.

  • Locate a small hexagonal-shaped hole at the very center of the bottom of the Insinkerator.

  • Insert the short end of a hex wrench into the hole. Grasp the long end of the hex wrench, which acts as a handle, and turn it clockwise to remove the clog. If the blades won't budge, try turning the hex wrench counterclockwise to push the clog back up into the top of the Insinkerator. You may need to use a bit of force to do this. When the clog is removed, the hex wrench will spin easily.

  • Turn the Insinkerator garbage disposal switch back on and test it by inserting an ice cube into the drain. If the ice cube passes through, the clog is fixed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have an older Insinkerator that does not have a hex slot on the bottom, insert a broom handle into the top of the Insinkerator through the sink drain. Use the broom handle to push against the metal blades until they spin freely.
