How to Survive a World Depression
The world economy is more integrated than ever before in history. While this state of affairs allows for massive trade and rapid transfers of capital, it also creates vulnerability. With the economies of all countries becoming more and more closely associated, each country becomes more vulnerable to other countries' financial troubles. Worldwide economic collapse becomes a real possibility. What do you do if that happens? This is one problem that you can't throw money at, because money won't be worth anything. If you weren't thinking creatively before, it's time to start now.

Learn New Skills
-
1
Learn to grow and store food. Food is the most important thing, and should be your top priority. Start a garden now, store seeds, if you are in a situation where it is possible, keep a few hens for eggs and meat.
-
2
Stop wasting money and learn to live on little. Pay down your mortgage as much as possible. Get rid of cable, expensive cell phone plans, and other unnecessary drains on your finances. Begin to move your diet toward simple and less expensive foods. Invest in good tools that will last and need little maintenance. Walk and bike, get into strong physical condition.
-
-
3
Learn how to build and maintain things yourself. A chicken shed for your hens is a good beginning project. Doing your own maintenance and building has multiple benefits: it saves money, gets you into better physical condition, and fosters an independent mindset.
Make Good Friends
-
4
Make contacts with other people who are interested in economic independence. After food, community is the most crucial and most neglected element in surviving difficult times. Find trustworthy, hard-working people who will be there for you if things get difficult.
-
5
Organize a weekly gardening group as a way of meeting people. It doesn't need to be in "survivalist" mode; there's no reason that it can't be an enjoyable thing. Learn about useful, hardy plants from each other, and share food growing knowledge.
-
6
Buy a piece of property with people whom you trust, and begin creating a safe haven there, with stored goods and an independent infrastructure.
Defend Yourself
-
7
Learn methods of self-defense to protect yourself from people who are not well prepared for a collapse.
-
8
Methods of self-defense can vary from verbal de-escalation of conflict to armed resistance, but the best method is to avoid trouble altogether. Don't be confrontational about your plans for survival, and don't be excessively public about the location of your safe haven.
-
9
Defend yourself from illness and poor health by eating whole foods, getting a lot of exercise, and avoiding contact with large crowds. Illness and injury will be much more serious in a situation of economic or social collapse, and either could be fatal.
