How to Create a Shortcut on a Palm Device

You may find you're writing a lot of repetitive information on your Palm handheld. For example, you may be writing your company name every time you add a co-worker to your Palm address book. You can create shortcuts to program the Palm to write an entire word or series of words when you enter a few keystrokes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Creating a New Shortcut

Step1
Tap the Applications icon (Palm III) or House icon (above Palm III) to display the main Palm screen.
Step2
Tap Prefs to display the Preferences screen.
Step3
Choose Shortcuts from the drop-down menu. You'll notice that some shortcuts have already been created for you.
Step4
Tap New to create a new shortcut.
Step5
Write a name for the shortcut (such as "eh") in the ShortCut Name field.
Step6
Write the text of the shortcut (such as "eHows are cool") in the Shortcut Text field.

Testing the New Shortcut

Step1
Press the Memo button to display the memo list.
Step2
Tap New to create a new memo.
Step3
Write the shortcut command (this looks like a cursive lowercase l).
Step4
Write your new shortcut name (in this example, "eh"). The text of the shortcut ("eHows are cool") should appear in the memo.

Tips & Warnings

  • The predefined shortcuts ds (Date Stamp), ts (Time Stamp), and dts (Date and Time Stamp) can be used to customize your notes.

on 4/26/2008 I am trying to set up a couple of shortcuts for user names and passwords. I can make them work in the memo pad, but only if the argument is lower case. The lookup, which is upper case, displays in lower case, making it useless for my purposes. I can't find a section in the T|X manual which explains the quirks, rules, and limitations for this feature.

on 11/22/2005 Shortcut .1 will hang your Palm. Mine just did and, after resetting and using it for awhile, I couldn't turn it on. Upon resetting, all data was gone. Luckily, I had HotSync.
