Instructions

    • 1

Select a watertight container to serve as the reservoir for the fountain. Check for leaks and repair any small cracks or holes with clear silicone caulk. Plastic tubs, metal basin or ceramic urns are all good choices.

    • 2

Place the container in a level spot where you will be able to see and hear the water in the completed fountain. Take note of the strength of the wind and sun. The sun will cause water to evaporate in very hot and sunny locations faster than other locations. Strong wind will redirect spouting water away from the reservoir.

    • 3

Choose a submersible pump that the manufacturer has rated for outdoor use. Take note of how many gallons of water your container holds. Check the pump's GPH (gallons per hour) rating and select one that will circulate the water at least once per hour.

    • 4

Fill the container with clean water.

    • 5

Submerge the pump in its upright position in the container.

    • 6

Connect clear vinyl tubing to the pump's outlet. Follow the pump manufacturer's recommendations for the diameter of the tubing. The length is the amount you need to run from the pump to a few inches above the surface of the water.

    • 7

Plug the pump in to a grounded outlet. Turn the pump on and adjust the height of the water spray. Adjust the strength of the pump so that the water makes enough of a splash for your taste but not so much as to splash out of the reservoir. Unplug the pump.

    • 8

Add your choice of decoration to the fountain. Common elements include, rocks, plants and small sculptures. Stack flat stones below the surface of the water to add height and to support the plastic tubing. Above the surface arrange the decorative elements to disguise the tubing and create a pleasing display.

    • 9

Plug the pump in and evaluate the water movement. Enjoy your patio fountain.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep plants in their own containers within the reservoir to prevent soil or debris from overwhelming the water pump.

  • Never operate your submersible water pump when it is not submerged in water; you risk burning out the motor.
