Internet Explorer by Microsoft is a web browser.

When you click on a website link or launch a website from within a program, by default Internet Explorer launches a new window. Even if Internet Explorer is already opened, a new window may appear. You can change this default to a custom setting. When changed, clicking on a new link opens a new tab within your already opened Internet Explorer browser window. In addition, pop-up windows will not appear in front of your current browsing session, instead appearing in a new tab.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click on "Internet Explorer" on your Windows Desktop. If you do not see an icon for "Internet Explorer" click on "Start" and "All Programs." Look for "Internet Explorer" in the list of programs and double-click on it.

Click on the "Tools" menu in the menu bar running across the top of Internet Explorer. If "Tools" is not present, look in the upper right side of the "Internet Explorer" window for a drop-down menu labeled "Tools" and click once.

Select "Options" or "Internet Options" from the drop-down menu that appears.

    • 4

Click on the "General" tab and scroll down until you see a heading for "Tabs." Click on the button labeled "Settings" under the "Tabs" heading.

    • 5

Check off the box next to "Enable Tabbed Browsing." Under "When a pop-up is encountered" click the selection button next to "Always open pop-ups in a new tab."

    • 6

Click the selection button next to "A new tab in the current window" under the "Open links from other programs in:" heading. Click "OK" to save the settings. Click "OK" again to exit the "Settings" menu. Restart Internet Explorer if prompted to do so.
