How to Write a Product Report

A product report is essentially a product review performed by an unbiased consumer-report agency with the intention of not only letting the public know more about a product on the market, but to alert them to any dangerous aspects or shortcomings of the product in question. To write an effective product report, you must test the product thoroughly to gain an understanding of the product's purpose and performance. Armed with this knowledge, you can write a product report that may be helpful to consumers when they make their purchasing decisions.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the manufacturer. Make notes about the company's history with similar products as well as involvement in other products. Research the company's reputation. A product report differs from a standard review in that it often includes information about the manufacturer and distributor of the product.

    • 2

Spend time using the product in question. A product report should both describe the product in question and highlight its good and bad qualities. An honest product report can only be written after you've used the product as recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 3

Begin the product report with a brief introduction about the manufacturer. The introduction may only be one paragraph, or two at the most, depending upon how extensively the company's history figures into the overall report. If the company has extensive experience (or even failures) manufacturing the product in question, you may need to devote a larger portion of the opening to the company's history.

    • 4

Follow with a description of the product and any claims the company makes regarding the performance or use of the product. Your report should address whether or not the product lives up to company claims.

    • 5

Describe your reaction to the product. Answer specific questions, including what you thought of the product, whether the product met your expectations, and if the quality and value were acceptable. Describe how you used the product and whether it was a satisfying or negative experience. Finish with a recommendation. Tell consumers directly whether the product is worth it or if you recommend staying away from it. Include any information regarding new versions or future improvements of the product by the company that makes it.
