How to Compare Steam Cleaners for Tile Floors

Find the right tile floor cleaner for your home.

More and more homeowners are installing tile floors in their homes, which means that more homeowners are looking for the best way to keep their investment looking its best. Tile steam cleaners provide deep cleaning of both the tile and the grout with water vapor and very few, if any, chemicals. Vapor floor cleaners heat with high enough steam to kill microorganisms growing on the tile and grout. Tile floor cleaners also have the capability of removing allergens from tile flooring surfaces. For truly versatile tile floor cleaners, look for models that can clean carpets as well.

Instructions

1. Compare the size of vapor cleaning machines. (See reference 1.) Some machines are quite small yet can deliver the same amount of steam cleaning power for your tile floors as larger models. Consider the weight of the machine loaded with water as well as the dimensions. Keep in mind the amount of space you need to clean as well as any obstructions you clean around. If possible, ask to see a demonstration of a floor model.

2. Look for desirable features on the steam cleaner. Find models with cords long enough to clean an entire room. Safety features such as safety switches are important features. A "ready" light also can tell you when the machine is hot enough to operate properly. The quick start-up feature allows you to begin cleaning within five minutes of plugging in the steam cleaner. Machines with stainless steel boilers last longer than other models.

3. Pick from tile steam cleaners that have generous tank capacity. Look for tanks that are easy to fill and empty. If you can't take the tank to a faucet to fill it, you should be able to fill it easily with a funnel. In this case, the funnel should be part of the accessory package.

4. Choose from models of tile floor cleaners that reach a suitable cleaning temperature in a short period of time. While it's possible to kill germs and allergens at lower temperatures, higher heat means you sanitize your floors in less time. Typically, this heat ranges from 200 to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. (See reference 2.) If you prefer to add chemicals to the steam, find models that allow for this.

5. Select tile steam cleaners with a generous accessory package. This should include several washable floor pads along with tools to allow you to clean in corners easily. Extension wands, upholstery and carpet tools, gum removers and window washing tools are common accessories.

6. Buy a cleaner that's within your budget and has the cleaning capacity you're looking for. Look for models that have long warranties.
