If someone owes you money, you might want to consider taking this person to small claims court. Small claims court is a fast, cheap and easy way to settle legal cases that involve less than $5,000. You don't need a lawyer to file a lawsuit in small claims court, even in New York City.

1. Go to the small claims court in the borough of your choosing to file a statement of your claim.

2. Ask the clerk for an application for a small claims lawsuit.

3. Fill out the application completely.

4. Give a brief statement on why you are suing on the application.

5. Turn in your application and pay the filing fee. As of May 2010, the fee was $15 if your claim is $1,000 or less. If your claim is more than $1,000, the fee is $20.

6. Get the date the case will be tried from the clerk.
