Online auction and shopping website, eBay, has national sites in dozens of countries all over the world including the U.S., Europe and Asia. However, it has no presence on the entire continent of Africa. That doesn't mean you can't sell on eBay in Africa, it just means you have a few more hoops to jump through before you can start.
If you are selling from Africa, you will also need to be more organized and creative when it comes to dispatching your items, attracting buyers and inspiring trust in potential buyers.
Things You'll Need
- Internet access
- Inventory to sell
Sell on eBay from Africa
Register on eBay.com. There is no Africa site for eBay, so register at eBay.com and choose which African country you are in. You will be required to provide contact details and also verify your email address. Once you have established an eBay account you will need to upgrade it so you are approved as a seller. You can do this via the Account tab in My eBay.
Register with PayPal. Open an account with PayPal.com at this early stage too because you'll need PayPal to take payments. Depending on your location, you may need to provide additional identification checks or undergo tougher fraud checks.
Sell some items to establish a feedback reputation. Establish your eBay presence by selling a few items. Don't take the plunge without valuable positive feedback. It's likely that your buyers won't be in Africa, but Europe, America and Asia so it's essential that you come across as trustworthy and honest.
Create reassuring and interesting listings. As you ramp up your sales from Africa, make sure that your eBay adverts or listings look good and give buyers all the information they need to buy from you. It's as important as having good positive feedback. You'll need to craft enticing descriptions, beautiful pictures, and keyword-rich titles. Again, as an African seller, you'll have to go the extra mile to attract buyers so don't cut corners when you present your wares.
Organize swift and reasonable dispatch. When people buy from you, it's vital that you send the items quickly. Sending items from Africa may mean that you don't have easy access to an efficient postal service so make sure you manage your buyers' expectations and let them know how long it will take for their purchases to arrive. On eBay, it's typical for buyers to cover the costs of delivery so make sure these are clearly displayed in your listings.
Expand your sales to other eBay country sites. When you register on eBay.com, your default selling currency will be American Dollars. Online, eBay.com is the biggest eBay marketplace, but don't forget other large sites in the eBay family such as German site eBay.de and British marketplace eBay.co.uk. If you sell on these sites you can sell in British pounds and euros too and open up your customer base to many more millions of customers.
