How to Unload Heavy Packages From an SUV

How to Unload Heavy Packages From an SUV thumbnail
You can haul lots of heavy things with your SUV, but it's important to know how to unload them once you get where you're going.

An SUV (or "sport utility vehicle") is a great type of truck that is very versatile. With the seats folded down, they provide lots of space for hauling cargo. Since they are built with suspension and cargo areas similar to those of a pickup, SUVs are often used to carry heavy packages. While unloading heavy packages, there are certain measures you must take to get the package on the ground safely.

Things You'll Need

  • Dolly
  • Belts or rope
  • Towel or blanket

Instructions

    • 1

Open the rear hatch and two back doors to the SUV. It will be easier to move the heavy package when you have access to it from all angles.

    • 2

Position a dolly in the cargo area so that you can slide or roll the heavy package onto it. Putting the package on wheels will make it easier to move.

    • 3

Strap the package to the dolly with belts or rope.

    • 4

Lay a towel or blanket on the bumper to prevent it from being scratched.

    • 5

Lean a plywood ramp onto the bumper.

    • 6

Roll the heavy package to the edge of the SUV and up onto the plywood ramp.

    • 7

Slowly roll the package down the ramp and onto the ground.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have a friend or two help steady the heavy package when rolling it down the ramp, so that you don't injure yourself or damage what you're carrying.
