How to Tailor Your Resume for a Job
Job searching is never easy---and it only gets tougher in a down economy or when you are trying to start or change careers. Targeting and tailoring your resume to specifically address a job description is a great way to help your application catch the eye of a hiring manager. It may be an essential step in getting your resume into the hands of a hiring manager if the company uses software to initially sort through incoming resumes.

1
Read the job description carefully and pick out important keywords. If your resume does not have these keywords, it may not get picked up by the computer system and get viewed by a human recruiter or hiring manager. Make a list of the keywords you find in the ad---these may include names of programs or common phrases that describe skill sets (for example, Photoshop, web design, HTML, search-engine optimization).
-
2
Make sure your keywords and phrases appear as close to the top of your resume as possible.
-
-
3
Delete or downplay items on your resume that are less directly applicable for the job.
-
4
Write an objective statement to use in your resume, highlighting the job that you are applying for. A focused objective statement can change the way a hiring manager views your resume. Think of it as a thesis statement, which you prove using the "evidence" you present in the rest of your resume through experience, education, transferable skills and interest.
-
5
Proofread your targeted resume carefully. Since you have made so many changes to the document, it's easy to overlook mistakes you may have added. Enlist a trusted family member, friend or colleague to proofread your targeted resume for you.
