When an Insinkerator Badger 5 garbage disposal jams, an internal breaker trips, and you need to reset if after clearing the jam. The procedure for clearing the jam is a simple one that employs a special key -- or "wrenchette" -- supplied with the unit. If you lost your wrenchette, don't worry; it's nothing but a 1/4-inch hex wrench that you can get one at any hardware store. It's important to clear the jam before pressing the reset button -- if you don't, you could damage the motor.
Clearing a Jam
Turn off the switch to the garbage disposal. To prevent an accidental start-up while you're working, turn off the breaker in the main panel that controls the garbage disposal circuit. Use a noncontact circuit tester to verify that no power will reach the unit.
Crawl into the sink cabinet with a head lamp and locate the slot for the wrenchette on the bottom of the disposal unit. Insert the wrenchette into the slot and rotate the impeller back and forth, until you can turn the wrench a full 360 degrees.
Reach into the disposal with a pair of tongs and retrieve any objects -- such as bones -- that may come loose when you rotate the impeller. Cycle back and forth between rotating the impeller and retrieving debris until the impeller moves freely when you turn it with the wrenchette.
Never reach into the disposal unit with your hand, even if it's off. A freak accident could cost you your fingers.
Resetting the Garbage Disposal
Turn the breaker back on. If the garbage disposal tripped the breaker, be sure to flip it all the way off -- toward the outside of the panel -- before turning it on.
Make sure that the disposal's motor has cooled for about five minutes since the jam occurred. Push in the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal unit. It's next to the slot for the wrenchette. You should hear a click, and the button should stay in. If that doesn't happen, you didn't reset the breaker properly. Go back to the panel and turn it all the way off, then on again.
Turn on the tap and then turn on the garbage disposal. If the reset function trips again, repeat the procedure for clearing the jam.
