Mildew is a type of fungus that grows in warm and moist conditions, which makes your shower an ideal location for mildew to breed. Mildew releases tiny reproductive bodies called spores that become mold when the right conditions exist. These spores can easily be inhaled through the lungs, which can lead to illness and respiratory problems. It can cause flulike symptoms including cough, sore throat and nasal congestion. If you find mildew in your shower, take immediate action for the health and safety of your family. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a face mask, protective eye wear and rubber gloves to keep from ingesting the tiny mildew spores. Ventilate your home while cleaning by opening up as many windows and doors as possible.

    • 2

Create a cleaning solution to kill the mildew. Mix 1 cup bleach with 4 cups water in a large bucket. Using a scrub brush with hard bristles, clean all affected areas until the mildew is completely removed. Use a towel to dry the walls and sides of your shower until it's completely dry.

    • 3

Remove mildew from the grout between your bathroom tiles. Mix equal parts of chlorine bleach and water in a spray bottle. Spray it over the grout and let it sit for 15 minutes. Scrub it off with a scrub brush, and then towel the area dry.

    • 4

Launder the mildew off your shower curtain with bleach and laundry detergent. Put the shower curtain on the gentle cycle of your washing machine. Add 1/4 cup laundry detergent and 1/2 cup bleach. Put your curtain on the lowest temperature setting in the dryer for 10 minutes. Once you are no longer in contact with the mildew, you can remove your protective gear.

    • 5

Prevent mildew from forming on your shower by wiping the walls with a towel or a squeegee after showering. This will keep your bathroom dry and free from mildew. Properly ventilate your shower to help eliminate moisture in your bathroom. A bathroom exhaust fan is an excellent way to extract excess moisture.
