How to Remove Duplicate Gmail Contacts

Gmail is a free email service offered by Google. Some of its features include chat, labeling and the automatic ability to save contacts. Organizing or wading through a lengthy list of contacts can be cumbersome, especially if there are duplicates. Another feature of Gmail is the ability to automatically find and merge these duplicate contacts. Removing duplicate contacts can come in handy when syncing your contacts to a phone through a computer program such as Outlook because it cuts down on redundancy.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to Gmail's website and log in to your account.

    • 2

Click the "Contacts" link on the left sidebar to open the contacts manager.

    • 3

Click the "Find Duplicates" button in the "My Contacts" section of the contacts manager. Gmail will take a moment to locate all duplicate contacts and provide a list.

    • 4

Review the list of duplicate contacts and make changes if desired. If you do not wish to merge the duplicates, click the check box to the right of the contact.

    • 5

Merge the duplicate contacts by selecting "Merge."
