How to Remove Grease From a Wood Cabinet

Wood cabinets add to the appearance of a kitchen.

Over time, a greasy film builds up on your wood cabinet due to cooking grease, natural oils from your skin, oil from lotions and other products, and food smears. Greasy residue on your wood cabinets can cause them to look unsightly and produce an unpleasant odor. Use simple supplies to deep-clean and remove the grease from your wood cabinets. Once you've done this, maintain the appearance of your wood cabinets by wiping them down with an all-purpose cleaner on a weekly basis and give them a deep-cleaning once a year.

Things You'll Need

• Bucket
• Water
• Measuring spoons
• Liquid dishwashing detergent
• Cleaning cloths
• Oil-based soap or saddle soap

Instructions

1. Fill a 1-gallon bucket halfway with hot water. Add 1 tsp. liquid dish washing detergent and stir the mixture with your hands to create a soapy solution.

2. Soak a cleaning cloth in the soapy solution and wring out the excess liquid. Wash around wood cabinet handles, in crevices and around the edges of the cabinets, where grease tends to accumulate the most. Rinse your cleaning cloth in the soapy solution frequently, and make a fresh batch of soapy solution if the water starts to look dirty.

3. 

   A bucket allows you to move your cleaning solution from one place to the next.

   Pour two to three capfuls of oil-based or saddle soap in a 1-gallon bucket and fill the bucket with hot water.

4. Saturate a clean cloth with the saddle-soap solution. Use this solution to wipe down your wood cabinets thoroughly. Go over particularly greasy areas twice if needed. Dry your wood cabinets with a clean, absorbent cloth.

Tips & Warnings

• Spray furniture polish on dull-looking wood cabinets. Polish them once a year to give them added luster.

• All-purpose cleaners will not remove grease buildup and reside but are good for cleaning wood cabinets on a daily or weekly basis.
