How to Get Rid of a Picture in the Desktop Background thumbnail
The grassy hill with blue sky and puffy clouds is a classic Windows XP wallpaper.

The background picture on a computer desktop is also referred to as the "wallpaper." Getting rid of one picture and exchanging it for another--or having no picture at all as a background to your desktop--is not a difficult task when using Microsoft Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click on the desktop. If you have a program or window open, minimize or close that window.

    • 2

Select "Properties" from the drop-down menu that appears (select "Personalize" in Windows 7). You'll get a pop-up window labeled "Display Properties." Select the "Desktop" tab on the top of the window. In Windows 7, select "Desktop Background."

Choose from one of the pictures listed in the box labeled "Background" to change the picture currently on your computer. If you don't like any of those pictures, click the "Browse..." button on the right side of the window and browse through your computer files until you find the picture of your choice. If you don't want a background picture at all, select "None" from the box labeled "Background." In Windows 7 click "Picture location" for a drop-down menu, or choose the "Browse" button and search your computer for a background image. If you don't want a background picture, choose "Solid Colors" in the drop-down menu.
