Install anti virus software. Even though anti virus programs are commonly used, users are not always aware of the maintenance needed to keep them running. Such programs tend to automatically update themselves as soon as new virus definitions become available. However, if your computer has already been compromised, you may need to manually update the database in case it was disabled. Ensure you manually check the virus definitions database to maximize computer network security.

Run an anti spyware program regularly. Unlike anti virus applications and other security software, spyware tools are more manual. They do not run in real time and users need to launch the application and set it to search for existing malware. To make better use of an anti spyware program, set it to automatically run at regular intervals, such as every night when the computer is not in use.

Enable a computer firewall. Keep your Operating System's firewall running or install one from a third party developer, such as an anti virus vendor or organization. Firewalls prevent malicious programs from infiltrating your system and the only programs allowed to make any modifications are ones recognized as safe within the firewall's database. Keep your Operating System updated. Maintaining all your system files up to date is important, as this enables it to protect itself against common and emerging threats. Your default Operating System will notify you of available updates for any particular hardware or system software.

Disable administrative privileges. Computer users like their freedom when using computers. However, if you rarely install programs such as games or multimedia tools, rely on using a guest user account or others with limited resources. The more restrictive your Operating System is, the less threats are able to enter your computer.
