How to Find an Ignition Coil on the MTD 12 Horsepower Riding Mower

An ignition coil on your MTD 12 horsepower riding mower is called an ignition module. Unlike the standard cylindrical automotive style ignition coils, the MTD version is a square metal device that is bolted directly to the engine to obtain a common ground. It works in the exact same way as a regular ignition coil, but since it only fires one or two cylinders in the riding mower, it does not have to be made as heavy-duty as a standard automotive coil, and hence it is a smaller squared-off ignition module. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Park your MTD riding mower on a level surface and chock the wheels to ensure that it cannot roll away. If you do not have actual wheel chocks, a board or a brick behind the two rear wheels will work equally as well.

    • 2

Remove the key from the ignition switch to ensure that the riding mower will not start.

    • 3

Open the hood of the riding mower.

    • 4

Locate the wire coming off the spark plug. It will be black and heavily rubber coated, and it will be the only wire coming from the engine.

    • 5

Trace that wire backward from the spark plug to the ignition module. There will be nothing in between the spark plug and the module, so the spark plug wire will be directly connected to the coil.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a twin-cylinder 12 horsepower MTD riding mower, either one of the wires attached to a spark plug will lead directly back to the ignition module.
