How to Create Your Own Virtual Avatar and Chat Online
An avatar is used online to represent an actual person. In video games, online or not, an avatar is usually the character controlled by the player’s actions. In social networking sites and chat rooms, an avatar is a picture representing the person. A chat room’s avatar is also known as an “icon.” Chat-room avatars can be cartoons, images or pictures.

1
Decide what you want your chat room avatar to be. For example, you can use a picture of yourself or a picture of something you like, such as a certain cartoon character. If you are getting a picture from the Internet, save the image onto your computer. If you are using a picture in your camera, upload or scan the picture onto your computer.
-
2
Open the picture using an image editing tool such as Paint. If the picture is big, more than 100 x1 00 pixels or so, then crop the picture to make it smaller. If it is a picture of you, for example, crop the picture so that only your face is part of the picture. Then click “Save As” and save the image under a title such as "avatar1."

Go to the chat website you use, such as Facebook, Myspace or Windows Live, and log into your account. If you don’t have an account with a website that offers chatting features, then create one. You’ll need to make up a user name and password and input your date of birth.
-
4
Upload the picture onto your profile. If you are creating a new account, you’ll get a prompt telling you to upload the picture. If you already have an account, click on the “edit profile” link and click on the profile picture to edit it. Once the picture has been uploaded and accepted as your profile picture, it will be your avatar in chat rooms or the chat feature of the site you are using.

5
Click “chat” to enter a chat room and begin chatting with people on the Internet.
