How to Learn Old Latin

How to Learn Old Latin thumbnail
Begin learning the classical Latin language.

Old Latin, commonly referred to as classical Latin, was the common language used during the reign of the Roman Empire. As the Roman Empire fell, the use of Latin as the common language started to fade and change into a similar dialect known as Ecclesiastical Latin used widely by the Roman Catholic Church. Classical Latin became the root language for English, Italian, French and Spanish.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll at a college or university that offers courses in language studies with an emphasis in classical Latin. Many colleges and universities offer courses in Latin, but may not have courses specific to classical Latin. Check that a classical Latin course of study is available.

    • 2

Hire a tutor who is well versed in the study of classical Latin. This will help you to understand the grammar, punctuation and spelling of classical Latin words and phrases. A tutor is a valuable asset when studying a difficult language as she will offer one-on-one instruction. You may have to look outside your college or university for a tutor, or your school may have a listing of tutors available who specialize in classical Latin.

    • 3

Obtain a language learning software program or guidebook such as a Latin beginners course available from RosettaStone.com or Wheelockslatin.com, or a classical Latin reference book. Use these for independent study as you are learning Latin.

    • 4

Practice speaking and writing classical Latin as often as you can. This is the best way to enhance your understanding of the archaic language, and will keep your writing and speaking skills polished should you choose a profession in the sciences or medicine where Latin terms are frequently used.
