How to Tell What Kind of RAM to Buy

There are multiple types of computer RAM (random access memory) available on the market today. Not all of the various types of RAM will work on all computers. Certain types of RAM will only work on certain machines. If you're in the market for a memory upgrade on your computer, it is important to see just what type of RAM you have to buy so that you don't end up wasting money on something you can't ultimately use with your machine.

Instructions

1. Understand that if you have a laptop computer you'll need to buy laptop RAM, and if you have a desktop computer you'll need to buy desktop RAM. The two types of RAM are not interchangeable.

2. Click "Start."

3. Click "All Programs."

4. Click "Accessories."

5. Click "System Tools" and then "System Information." The window on the screen will contain information as to the type of RAM and how much RAM you have installed in your computer. Buy the type of RAM listed on the screen.
