Learn how to tie ice hockey skates.

Ice skaters and hockey players each wear a unique skate for performing dexterous and agile maneuvers on ice. All ice skates, including hockey skates, need to be tough and durable to handle harsh conditions out on the ice, and should fit tightly and securely to allow for quick and precise movement. Loose hockey skates will ultimately impede any hockey player's performance, and can result in serious injury if the skates should slip. Learning how to properly lace and tie hockey skates securely is essential for any hockey player to perform at an optimal level while out on the ice.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your foot into the skate, and push your foot down and back to seat your heel all the way into the back of the skate.

    • 2

Lace the skate by inserting the shoelace into the bottom eyelet and across to the other bottom eyelet. Pull the lace up on both sides and ensure that you have an equal length of lace on both sides. Place the right lace into the next available eyelet on the left side of the skate, then lace across to the third eyelet on the right side. Do the same with the left lace, crossing it over to the the right side of the skate and back. Alternate lacing in this pattern until you reach the top four eyelets.

    • 3

Cinch the laces down tight by grasping the top lace crossing and pulling up to remove any slack. Then continue lacing each end through the appropriate eyelets at the top of the skate. Pull tight, holding pressure on each lace as you insert them into the next eyelet, and repeat until the shoe is fully laced.

    • 4

Tie the laces into a standard bow by crossing the laces and tucking one end under the other. Loop one side, then wrap the opposite lace around the loop (this action will create a loop), and form another loop by pulling the lace through the loop you just created. Repeat the process to create a double-knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure that you apply the most pressure to the top four eyelets as you lace the skate.

  • You will need to readjust your laces every time you put on the skate as they will become loose once you take them off. Skate lace tightening tools are available to ease the process of tightening laces; these are available at most sporting goods and hockey stores.
