How to Change the Processor on a Pentium 2 Celeron thumbnail
Pentium 2 processors can be changed.

The Pentium 2 Celeron processor was considered moderately fast at the time of its release but the Celeron brand was marketed as a cheaper chip that had less onboard cache, making the chip slower than other Pentium processors of the time. You can switch out the Pentium 2 processor on your computer with another processor but because of the age of this technology the options to replace it are limited.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the computer case and locate the Pentium 2 Celeron processor. The processor will be covered with a fan and heatsink combination. Use a pair of pliers to disconnect the heatsink. The fan is screwed on top of the heatsink and can remain there. Unplug the fan from the motherboard. Remove the unit from the case.

    • 2

Lift the metal bar that holds the processor in place. Pull the chip out of the space where it is located.

    • 3

Read your computer manual to find out the limits of your motherboard as to what kind of chip can be used. You will probably only be able to use the same processor or slightly faster.

    • 4

Purchase or find another processor that will work in your motherboard. Insert the new chip where the old one was. Close the bar on the chip holder and put the fan and heatsink back in place.
