Donating computers to charity is the best way to get rid of used equipment. Charities appreciate computers that are in good working condition, and donation is often the only way that they can get computers. Giving a used computer to a charity is a wonderful way to support a cause you believe in.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all your personal data from the computer you want to donate. You do not want to give anyone access to your bank account or your credit card numbers. Wipe the hard drive clean, and remove gaming programs. Charities do not usually want old games.

    • 2

Clean the computer and pack up all the software, speakers and other items that you may want to donate with the computer. Compile a list of the content so that the charity knows exactly what it is getting. This makes it easier for the charity when it starts setting up and using the computer.

    • 3

Not all charities accept used computer donations, so call first to see if they do. Find out what is an acceptable used computer donation by asking. Get a receipt for tax purposes so you can deduct your donation at the end of the year.

    • 4

Contact one of the following three websites dedicated to helping you donate your computer to charity: ComputerswithCauses.org, ActionDonation.org and Recycle.org. The websites may have access to charities that you cannot find locally and that will sometimes come to your home to pick up used equipment. You may choose to ship the used computer equipment, which is more expensive, but shipping costs can also be tax-deductible.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep records of who you donate to. You can use theses records when you do taxes.

  • Make sure all the pieces of the machine are together. You don't want old computer parts laying around.

  • Test that everything works. Charities do not want broken computers.
