How to Upgrade a Web Browser for Windows Me

You can upgrade your Windows Me Internet browser.

Originally bundled with Internet Explorer 5.5, your Windows Me-based computer's web browser is easily upgradable to the next version of Internet Explorer (IE) or another web browser. Although Microsoft no longer supports Windows Me, the next version of Internet Explorer, IE 6 Service Pack 1, is still available for downloading. The browser offers better security features and enhanced website loading ability than IE 5.5 and IE 6 and the browser is compatible with Windows Me. There are also third-party web browsers available for your Windows Me-based system.

Instructions

IE 6

1. Open your computer's Internet browser, Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6. (If your Windows Me-based system already has Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1, skip to the other sections of this article.)

2. Click on the "Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1" link (see Resources) to access the IE 6 web browser upgrade website.

3. Click on the "Download" button to download the latest version of IE 6. Click on "Save All," "Save As" or "Save" when the "Opening ie6setup.exe" dialog box opens.

4. Navigate to the directory containing the "ie6setup.exe" file. Double-click on the file's name to run the web browser setup program.

5. Follow the on-screen prompts to upgrade your Windows Me-based system's web browser.

6. Click "Start > Shut Down > Restart" to restart your computer once the IE 6 installation process is complete.

Opera

1. Open your computer's Internet browser.

2. Click on the "Opera Browser" link below (see Resources).

3. Click on the "Download Opera" button to download the latest version of the Opera browser. Click on "Save All," "Save As" or "Save" when the "Opening Opera_1...n_Setup.exe" dialog box opens.

4. Navigate to the directory containing the "Opera_1...n_Setup.exe" file. Double-click on the file's name to run the setup program.

5. Follow the on-screen prompts to upgrade your Windows Me-based system's web browser. Click "Finish" when prompted.

Firefox

1. Open your computer's Internet browser. Click on the "Firefox 2.0.0.20" link below (see Resources).

2. Click on "Download Now" to access the Firefox download server website. Click on the "Download Now" button to download Firefox 2.0.0.20.

3. Click on "Save All," "Save As" or "Save" when the "Opening Firefox 2.0.0.20.exe" dialog box opens.

4. Navigate to the directory containing the downloaded file. Double click on "Firefox 2.0.0.20.exe" to begin the browser installation process.

5. Follow the on-screen prompts to upgrade your Windows Me-based system's web browser. Click "Finish" when prompted.

Tips & Warnings

• If upgrading your Windows Me browser with a browser that is not Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1, delete your computer's old web browser to gain hard drive space, if space is limited on your computer.

• Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 removes IE 5.5 and IE 6 once the installation process starts. Your "Favorites" are automatically transferred to IE 6 Service Pack 1.
