How to Send a Fax in Windows Vista

A fax is a document sent over a telephone line. It consists of text and graphical information. Windows Vista allows you to send a fax directly from your computer to your recipient's fax machine. This is especially convenient if you do not have a stand-alone fax machine. You can send a fax in Windows Vista by either using the Windows Fax and Scan tool directly or accessing it through another program run on Windows.

      Click the Windows "Start" menu and select "All Programs." Scroll up the pop-up menu and click "Windows Fax and Scan."

      Click "New Fax" on the toolbar. This launches the modem setup wizard. Follow the guided prompts to complete the setup. When you finish, use the options provided in the New Fax window to type your fax information. For example, enter your recipient's fax number and the message you want to send.

      Click the "Tools" menu and click "Create a cover page" if you want to add a cover page to your fax. Click "New" and click "Insert." Type your recipient's fax number and any other information you want to add. Type your phone number. Click the "Shapes" option on the toolbar if you want to add shapes to the cover page. To add a picture, paste it to the section on the cover page where you want to add the image. Click "File" and then "Save" to save the cover page.

      Click "Send" to send your fax message.

      Open the document you want to send as a fax. Launch the printing dialog box by clicking the "File" menu and clicking "Print."

      Locate the printer selection option. It is generally under "Printer" or "Select Printer." Click "Fax" in the list of available printers and click "Print." Windows Fax and Scan opens a new fax with your file attached.
