How to Open a Text Document

A text document may have a TXT, DAT, LOG or HTML file extension. You can create one in a text editor of your choice. Since text documents do not include special formatting, they appear as plain text within an application. You can open a text document directly in the application it was created in or from your desktop or the folder it was saved to.

  • Open a text document in a text editor by selecting the text file from your folder or desktop and double clicking it. The file will open in your computer's default text editor.

  • Open a text document by choosing which application it opens in. Select the text file from your folder or desktop, then right click on it and pick "Open With" from the list of choices. Choose a text editor, such as Notepad, WordPad or TextEdit from the list.

  • Open a text editor and select "File" and "Open" to open the text document directly. Navigate to the file's location in the "Open" dialog box and double click it. The document will load in your text editor.
