How to Find a Contract Job

Contract jobs are offered to people on a temporary basis. Contract jobs allow for flexibility and may expose you to new opportunities. When an organization needs only to staff a short-term project, or when the overall economy is doing poorly, many companies offer contract jobs in lieu of employee positions. Contract jobs are also alternatives for recent college graduates who cannot find a permanent position, or for persons who are in the midst of a career change. In most cases, contract jobs are found through temporary employment agencies.

      Update your resumé. In order to find a job, you will need to keep an updated resumé for either a potential employer or a temporary employment agency. Make sure you keep your employment and education history and your contact information current.

      Create accounts with job-search websites. Common job-search websites are Monster and Careerbuilder (see Resources). In many cases, temporary jobs and temporary employment agencies list available jobs on these websites. Submit your updated resumé to the job-search website so that potential employers may also find you. Once your account has been created, use the job-search website's application function for as many contract jobs as you see fit.

      Create accounts with temporary employment agencies. You may create accounts and submit resumés to as many agencies as you want. Adecco, Robert Half International, and Spherion Staffing Services are well-known employment agencies that work with companies to find temporary and contract workers (see Resources).

      Interview with the employment agencies. When a temporary employment agency has potentially matched your resumé with their client's requisition, they will often ask you to come in for an interview. Treat this interview as if you are interviewing for the actual job because the temporary employment agency acts as a screening interview before you interview with the actual company.
