How to Get the PUK Code for a Cell Phone

The personal identification number (PIN) on your cell phone acts as a security measure to keep unauthorized users from accessing your cell phone. But if you forget your PIN, you'll also be locked out. The pin unlock key (PUK) is a six-digit number that helps you reset your PIN. Most users don’t even realize they have a PUK code until they fail to enter the correct PIN code in their cell phones three times. At that point, the cell phone asks for a PUK code and you must contact your mobile service provider.

  • Call your mobile provider’s customer service department. Verify the security information on your service account.

  • Explain to the customer service representative that you have exceeded the maximum attempts to enter your PIN code into your cell phone and that your cell phone is now asking for a PUK code. Write down the six-digit PUK code to your SIM card for safe keeping.

  • Enter the PUK code on your cell phone in the field provided. Press the Enter/OK key. Enter your new PIN code twice and press the Enter/OK key again.

Tips & Warnings

  • PUK codes are specific to each subscriber identity module (SIM) card. You can save your PUK code for future use but it will only work in a phone that has the SIM card in question.
  • Do not try to guess your PUK code. Depending on your mobile provider, you only have three to five attempts to enter the correct sequence. After the last attempt, the SIM card will be have to be replaced.
