How to Maintain U.S. Citizenship Overseas

How to Maintain U.S. Citizenship Overseas thumbnail
Maintaining U.S. citizenship isn't very hard to do.

For those who have U.S. citizenship that choose to go abroad (whether temporarily or permanently), maintaining that U.S. citizenship requires practically no effort. If you have a consulate post in the area that you're going to it becomes even easier to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure all of your papers are in order. Other countries will require that you have the appropriate visa (long term, short term, residence) before you leave the United States.

    • 2

Register yourself with the U.S. consulate when you arrive in your country of destination. This isn't strictly necessary, but it is helpful and it helps to maintain your ties to the U.S. The result is that registering makes it look as if you definitely care about your citizenship.

    • 3

Fill out dual citizenship forms. This is necessary if you want to become a citizen of another country and maintain your U.S. citizenship. This means that your new country must be willing to accept that you have dual citizenship with the U.S., and the U.S. has to be willing to recognize that you have dual citizenship with another country. The consular's office can help you apply, but you will need to fill out paperwork for each country to maintain your original citizenship and get your new citizenship.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are just visiting or temporarily living abroad, you will automatically retain your U.S. citizenship. No special action is required unless you opt for dual citizenship.
