Donate old and unused items to someone on Freecycle.

Freecycle is a nationwide organization dedicated to enabling individuals to give and get items for free in their own communities. Rather than people throwing away old, broken or unused items--and those objects ending up in a landfill--others (including community organizations) may find good use for them. Freecycle email groups allow subscribers to connect by posting offers of objects to give away as well as posting requests for items they may need.

Instructions

    • 1

Search online for your community's local Freecycle email group (see Resources).

    • 2

Sign up for a Freecycle account by entering a user name and password and indicating your personal email setting preferences for the group.

    • 3

Once you are approved to join (or have instantly received approval, in some cases), open your email program and compose a message to the Freecycle group.

    • 4

In the subject line of your email message, type "OFFER:" followed by a very short description of the item you're giving away.

    • 5

Type the email message, describing the item that you're giving away (color, size, how long you've owned it, how many available, any imperfections and where the item is located).

    • 6

Type a brief sentence or two at the end of your email message, telling the reader when the item will be available for pickup and whether the item will be available to the first person who responds via email to the group.

    • 7

Hit "Send" to send your email message to the group.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may choose to hide your email address from the group for privacy reasons. Also, it's a nice idea to send a thank-you note (snail mail or email) to the person from whom you've received a Freecycle item.

  • For privacy and security reasons, never meet a complete stranger in a private, secluded location; instead, if you're arranging to give the item to someone in person, meet in an open, public place.
