An example of spool trimmers.

Gas trimmers help cut down weeds and grass that a lawn mower or lawn tractor cannot reach. Replacing the line in a gas trimmer is simple. There are two styles of trimmer line: fixed line and spool. Fixed line trimmers require a seven inch piece of special line that feeds through a series of holes where a spool trimmer requires wrapping line around a spool that connects into the trimmer's head. Check your owner's manual to see what kind of style your trimmer is. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Spool Trimmers

    • 1

Push the two plastic buttons on the trimmer head together. While pushing the buttons, pull outward. This will dislodge the spool.

    • 2

Wrap three feet of trimmer line around the spool until seven inches are left unwrapped.

    • 3

Place the spool against the head. Feed the seven inches of line through the hole in the head.

    • 4

Snap the spool in the head by pushing the spool in with your hand.

    Fixed Line

    • 5

Grab a piece of fixed line string. Locate the center holes in the side of the trimmer head.

    • 6

Push the ends of the line through the holes. Continue to feed the line through the holes until it comes out of the sides.

    • 7

Pull the string tight by pulling on the line that is coming out the sides.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a spool trimmer, you can buy a 10 foot piece of line that you can cut the appropriate size. It is cheaper by the foot than buying precut sizes.

  • Do not turn the trimmer on for any reason during the repair.
