How to Unlock a Maytag Oven

Save

When you place the Maytag oven into self clean mode, the oven door will lock to prevent the door from accidentally being open during cleaning. This is due to the fact that during the cleaning cycle, the oven reaches temperatures far above normal cooking. The door will automatically unlock after the oven finishes the cycle. The oven must cool down for at least two hours before the lock solenoid will disengage the door latch. If the oven is cool and will still not unlock, you can manually unlock the Maytag oven with a clothes hanger.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal clothes hangar
  • Tin snips
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Disconnect the power from the Maytag oven. Unplug the oven power cord from the outlet or turn off the circuit breaker in your home electrical panel.

  • Cut the hook and coil off the metal clothes hangar with a pair of tin snips or wire cutters. Bend the remaining portion of the clothes hanger straight.

  • Bend a one inch u-hook on one end of the wire with a pair of needle nose pliers.

  • Insert the u-hook between the oven door and the oven cabinet on the left side. Slide the hook up until you feel the door latch.

  • Pull up on the clothes hanger and push the front of the door in slightly to disengage the door latch to open the door.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test the door latch and solenoid after you open the oven door. Replace as necessary.
  • Always disconnect power from appliances before servicing them.
