Instructions

Prepare the area to be cleaned by moving all linens, appliances or other items. If you're cleaning in a bathroom, move all bottles, tooth brushes and towels out of the way. For kitchen counters, move all food items, knick knacks, and anything else on the counters. For floors, make sure all rugs, door stops and moveable furniture are out of the way.

    • 2

Wipe or vacuum the areas to be steam cleaned. Dirt and dust will get in the way of the sanitizing effect of steam cleaning and also can create a gummy mess. It's best to steam an area that is free of as much dirt and dust as possible.

    • 3

Fill the steam cleaner with fresh, clean water and turn the cleaner on. When the "ready" light is on, press the trigger that releases the steam. Allow steam to run through the system for about 15 seconds before beginning to clean.

    • 4

Run the stream of steam vapor over the surface to be cleaned. The steam vapor loosens dirt particles and sanitizes the surface. If the surface is covered in mineral deposits, such as the tile in a bathroom shower stall, wipe the surface with lemon juice or vinegar before running the steam vapor over it. The vinegar or lemon juice will help the steam to get rid of the mineral and water stains.

    • 5

Wipe loosened dirt or grime off with a clean cotton rag. If the surface wasn't very dirty to begin with, this step will not be necessary. The surface will probably not be wet because the steam vapor dries so quickly at such high temperatures.

    • 6

Empty the water canister from the steam cleaner and wind up the cord so your steam cleaner will be ready for the next time you need to use it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look for the best type of steam cleaner for your home. There are hand-held models, canister models and upright vacuum-type models. As of 2010, the prices ranged from $40-$3,000.

  • Do not allow the stream of vapor from your steam cleaner to be directed toward any person or animals. High-temperature steam can cause severe burns.
