How to Sew Nylon Panties

Making a pair of panties is a simple project that is a good introduction to sewing lingerie or your own clothing. While a variety of panty patterns are available, a one-piece pattern simplifies the process. You also can make your own one-piece pattern using any type of panties you enjoy wearing. Be patient when working with nylon fabric as silky fabrics may slip and slide under the needle of your sewing machine, causing mistakes. Stitch slowly and take your time and your technique will improve with practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a one-piece panty pattern or carefully cut an existing pair of panties open along the side seams to create your own pattern.

    • 2

Pin the pattern to the nylon material and cut the nylon so that it is the same size as the pattern. If you created your own pattern using a pair or panties, trace around the pattern approximately 1/4 inch and cut along this line to accommodate for seam allowances.

    • 3

Cut a piece of white cotton approximately the same size as the narrow middle section of your pattern if you would like a crotch panel in your panties.

    • 4

Equip your sewing machine with a size 9/70 or size 11/80 sewing machine needles. These sizes are appropriate for lightweight fabrics such as nylon and will prevent the fabric from snagging or puckering during sewing.

    • 5

Sew the ends of crotch panel into place on the wrong side of the nylon fabric using a zigzag stitch. Do not worry about securing the sides of the crotch panel where your legs will be at this time.

    • 6

Measure decorative elastic around the tops of your legs where the bottom of the panties will be located. The elastic should fit snug around your legs but it should not be uncomfortably tight. Cut two pieces of elastic using this measurement.

    • 7

Pin one piece of elastic to the edge of the leg opening on the outside of the panties. This will be slightly difficult because the elastic will probably need to stretch in order to cover the entire length of the opening. Pin the ends of the elastic in place first and then add several more pins along the length of the opening.

    • 8

Sew the elastic into place using a straight stitch and sewing near the inside edge of the elastic. As you sew the elastic into place, it will secure the sides of the crotch panel to the panties. Repeat the process of pinning and sewing the elastic on the other leg opening.

    • 9

Fold the panty in half, inside out. Sew the seams along each side of the panties using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. These are the seams located on the right and left sides at your hip. Trim the seams to 1/8 inch and turn the panties inside out.

    • 10

Cut a piece of elastic so that it fits snug, but not tight, around your body where you want the top of the panty to rest. Pin and sew the elastic to the outside of the waistband of the panties in the same manner you attached the elastic for the leg openings.
