2001 Suburban: Automatic Transmission Pan Removal
The Chevrolet Suburban is made for almost every task an SUV was originally designed for. The Suburban can tow trailers, carry up to seven passengers comfortably and serve as a great work truck. Ensuring the Suburban stays dependable will require performing maintenance on your transmission. Pulling your oil pan down to access the transmission filter or to change your transmission fluid properly is essential. This will ensure your transmission shifts smoothly for many miles to come.
Things You'll Need
- Drain pan
- Crescent wrench
- Socket set
- Socket wrench
- Hammer
- Razor scraper
- Putty knife

Locate the transmission under the truck. The transmission is located behind the engine.

Place a drain pan under the transmission. Locate the drain plug at the bottom of the pan.

Unscrew the drain plug with a crescent wrench. Allow the transmission fluid to pour out of the transmission pan. Screw the drain plug back to the pan with the crescent wrench.

Unscrew the twelve bolts around the transmission pan with a socket wrench. Place the bolts to the side.

Pull the pan down with your hands. The pan may be stubborn so you can tap the pan with a hammer to loosen the pan from the bottom of the transmission. Pull the transmission pan out from under the truck.

Tips & Warnings
The Suburban sits high enough that you should not need a jack to raise the truck up.
Contact your local recycling center for disposal of the waste transmission fluid.
Use caution when working underneath the truck. Ensure the parking brake is set and the truck is parked on level ground.
