How to Tell If Someone Is on Yahoo Instant Messenger?

Yahoo Instant Messenger is software that can be used to send messages to others. A user can quickly determine if someone from his "Friends" list is currently using Yahoo Messenger, then chat with this person by sending an instant message.

Instructions

1. Open Yahoo Messenger and sign in with your User ID and password.

2. Click the "Contacts" tab located beneath the status bar. You can view your Yahoo Messenger friends and address book here.

3. Click the arrow beside "Friends" to view your list of friends on Yahoo Messenger.

4. Determine if Yahoo Messenger users are online at the time by looking at their User ID. If a yellow smiley face is shown beside the User ID, that person is using Yahoo Messenger. If the smiley face is gray, the person is not using Yahoo Messenger at the moment or has chosen to remain hidden.

Tips & Warnings

• If you want to be alerted when someone from your "Friends" list signs on to Yahoo Messenger, click "Messenger" from the top menu and select "Preferences" from the drop-down menu. Click "Alerts & Sounds" when the Preferences window opens and check the box next to "Enable alert sounds." Click "OK" and you will hear an alert when someone on your list signs on.
