Automotive electricians play crucial parts in the creation and maintenance of vehicles. They specialize in understanding how all of the electronics in the vehicle work, and how to fix them if anything should ever break. Being an automotive electrician requires certain training and schooling, along with an apprenticeship. It requires a lot of time and patience to get through all of the academic portions, but with a few tips the adventure getting there should go a little smoother.
Things You'll Need
- Technical College
Find a college offering courses that specialize in automotive electronics. A lot of colleges offer online courses, so you are not limited to colleges that are in your area. Colleges will often have career paths that you can follow. Some colleges also offer apprenticeships, which would be the equivalent of an internship.
Follow the class plan that your adviser has set up for you. Pay attention in all of your classes and study the material. The automotive electrician industry is a challenging one, and there is a lot of competition for jobs. You want to make sure that you have the advantage over someone else. You should also take advantage of the teachers at your college, because they are an extremely useful source of information.
Find an apprenticeship and excel at it. An apprenticeship is necessary to get into the industry. It allows you to get hands-on training with others that are experts in the field. They will teach you some crucial skills and let you apply all of the knowledge you have learned in school. You may end up getting a full-time position out of the apprenticeship, which would allow you to jump right into the industry. Take it seriously and do your best, because people in an industry often talk to each other. You don't want to get a bad reputation before you even get out of school.
Graduate from college and receive your degree. You are now a full-fledged automotive electrician. You will have received on-the-job training, licensing, and completed your apprenticeship. You can now attempt to find a job in the industry, or open up your own business. The choices are numerous at this point, but you have at least completed all there is to become an automotive electrician.
Tips & Warnings
- College can often be expensive, so you want to make sure that you are getting the most for your money. Start by searching for a college in your state. In-state college tuition is often exponentially cheaper than out-of-state tuition.
- Always be careful when dealing with electronic equipment. You should always wear a rubber insulated glove. Never deal with an electronic problem that you have not been properly trained to deal with.
- The teachers at your college are some of the best resources you will have available. You want to take advantage of the time you have with them. Ask them questions and prod them for answers that you need.
