How to Clean Dark Wood Floors
Dark wood floors add elegance to any room of the home. Just like any other type of flooring, dark wood floors need to be cleaned regularly. Dirt, dust, grit and other debris accumulate on the floor making the surface unsightly. In addition, grit and dirt on wood floors can cause scratches. Cleaning wood floors requires little more than common products you likely already have at home. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Dust mop or vacuum with soft brush attachment
- Bucket
- Water
- Dish soap
- Sponge mop
- Soft rags
- ¼ cup white vinegar
- Spray bottle

Dust mop or vacuum the floor. This will remove all of the loosened dirt and debris. If using a vacuum cleaner, make sure to use the soft-brush attachment to clean hardwood floors.

Fill a bucket with warm water. Add a few drops of dish soap and use your hands to mix up the ingredients.

Dip a sponge mop into the soapy water and wring it out well. It is important to use as little water as possible when cleaning dark wood floors.

Mop the hardwood floor working in the direction of the woods' grain. Go back and forth using smooth, even strokes.

Wipe down the floor with a soft cloth to remove any excess moisture or soap residue. Run the rag gently over the floor working in a circular motion.

Use white vinegar if the floor is really dirty and in need of a deep cleaning. Mix ¼ cup white vinegar into a spray bottle with 30 oz. warm water.

Spray the vinegar solution onto a soft rag. Avoid using too much cleaner, as hardwood floors can become warped or damaged from excessive moisture.

Wipe down the hardwood floor with the rag. Add more vinegar solution, as necessary. Switch to a clean rag as one becomes soiled. There is no need to rinse the vinegar from the floor.

Tips & Warnings
Do not use water or vinegar on lacquered or shellacked hardwood floors. Check with your hardwood flooring manufacturer for specific cleaners.
