However, there are dozens, if not hundreds of USB flash drives available, each offering its own specific features. When in the market for a new flash drive, it is important to look at all the specifications of the flash drive to ensure the best storage device is purchased.

Set a price limit. This helps narrow down the flash drives available for purchase. Flash drives can vary in price, ranging from less than $10 to far more than $100.

Look at the storage space of the flash drive. As storage becomes cheaper to manufacturer the flash drive's available storage increases. As of May 2010, it is possible purchase a flash drive with hundreds of gigabytes of storage space. The larger the capacity, the more expensive the device is.

Check the physical size of the flash drive. Although incredibly tiny drives are nice, they are easy to loose. A helpful option is a flash drive that attaches to a key ring. Otherwise the device may seem to simply vanish without any clue of its whereabouts.

Inspect the device to see if it doubles as another product. Some are built into the caps of pens while others have actual eraser material around them (great for art students).

Read the details about the flash drive to see if it is USB 2.0 or USB 1.1. The USB 2.0 flash drives transfer data faster than the older 1.1 devices.
