Obtaining a life and health insurance producer's license

Obtaining a life and health insurance license is a multi-step process that involves self-study of industry materials, familiarization with state regulations, in-person classroom instruction, and complex examinations. Every state may have slightly different rules and procedures for getting a life and health insurance license, but most states follow similar steps when issuing producer's licenses.

Instructions

    • 1

Study pre-licensing material. Contact your state's insurance department for details on how and where to obtain the books and literature required for pre-licensing education. Purchase the material and study the information until you are comfortable with it.

    • 2

Obtain pre-licensing course certification. When you have finished studying the life and health insurance pre-licensing material, complete your program course tests to demonstrate your comprehension and retention of covered material. If you achieve a passing grade on the pre-licensing course tests, a certificate will be issued indicating successful completion.

    • 3

Schedule the insurance producer's exam. Contact your state's insurance department for information on how and where you are able to take the life and health insurance producer's exam. Call the testing center and make arrangements to sit for the exam. Fax or mail a copy of your pre-licensing course completion certificate to the testing center to verify your eligibility to take the state life and health insurance producer's exam.

    • 4

Successfully complete the exam. Arrive at the testing center location early enough to check in with the administrators and proctors. Answer the test questions to the best of your ability, drawing on what you learned during pre-licensing courses. The large majority of states consider a score of at least 70 percent to be a passing grade, and will then issue you a valid life and health insurance producer's license.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many states allow prospective insurance producers to study using online presentations and other digital media. It may benefit you to review pre-licensing course material online, as opposed to buying tangible books and other study aids.

  • It is illegal to service or solicit the sale of insurance products without proper licensure. Do not engage in any life or health insurance business until you have completed the state insurance producer's exam and received your license.
