Paint primers are widely used in new-home construction because primers cost less than interior or exterior paint, which will adhere better to the primed surface.

Kilz 2 Primer is widely known as a good choice for interior and exterior priming because it has materials that retard mold growth and it also has excellent stain-hiding properties when applied over previously painted surfaces. It will hide wax, permanent markers, water stains, food stains, and oil stains. It can be applied to drywall, masonry products and wood. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Priming New Surfaces

    • 1

Purchase the Kilz 2 Primer. Ask someone in the paint department to put it in the shaking machine If the paint has been sitting on the shelf at home for a while, get a clean paint-stirring stick and stir the paint thoroughly. All paint settles as it sits, and the chemicals inside it need to be thoroughly mixed for an even application.

    • 2

Assemble the tools and materials needed to paint. If the doors, baseboards, and window frames have finishes on them, mask them off with the tape so the primer does not touch them. Either remove the face plates for the switches and electrical outlets or mask them as well. Put the materials on the drop cloth or on a covered table so paint doesn't drip on the floor or, if spills occur, they can be contained.

    • 3

Cut in the edges of the room with a paintbrush. It is easier to pour a little paint in a can in which the brush will fit easily than haul a gallon of paint around the room. Leave the tape on until the complete painting project is finished.

    • 4

Pour paint in the bottom of the tray, moisten the paint roller, and begin painting the walls. If the weather is nice, an open window may hasten drying time and bring in fresh air. The walls will be ready to paint after the primer has dried for one hour if it is a fast-drying primer.

Covering Stains or Bright Paint Colors with Kilz 2 Primer

    • 5

Scrub the stained area with a clean, wet cloth. Let it dry.

    • 6

Apply the Kilz 2 Primer by either brushing it on if it is a small area, or use a roller if it is a larger area. Let dry one hour and apply a coat of the original paint. If the original paint is too old to use, the wall or the entire room may need to be painted again using another color. The entire room will not need to be primed, just the stained area.

    • 7

Paint all the walls with Kilz 2 Primer if covering a deep or bright color. Follow the steps in Section 1 to prime all the walls when covering dark paint.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always have wet cloths handy when painting in case of spills. When wet, latex paints are easily removed, but after they dry, they are a challenge to remove.

  • When painting rough masonry surfaces, use a thick roller to apply the primer.
