How to Fix a Portable Air Compressor Problem
Owning a portable air compressor can save you the hassle of driving to a gas station every time you need air in your tires. By attaching a variety of pneumatic tools such as paint sprayers or wrenches to its hose, you can also get more value from the compressor. Like any power tool, an air compressor can develop problems. If you know how to troubleshoot your air compressor, you may be able to make simple repairs yourself.

1
Plug the portable air compressor into a live electrical outlet. (See References 1) Check the unit's power cord to make sure it has no cracks or signs of wear. Replace it if it does.
-
2
Allow the air compressor enough time to build up pressure before operating it. If it shuts off without building up pressure, you may need to replace the check valve. Examine the air filter and replace it if it's dirty. Bleed the air from the tank and try refilling it. Also look for air leaks, especially around fittings and the air compressor hose and nozzle. It's normal for some air pressure to leak out of the compressor over time.

3
Turn the portable air compressor off immediately if you see dark smoke coming from it. (See References 2) This may indicate that the oil may be overheating. Allow the air compressor to cool completely before proceeding. Check that the oil is clean and has the proper level and viscosity. Replace dirty oil. If any gaskets are leaking oil; they may need tightening or replacement.
-
4
Operate the air compressor on a level surface. Failure to do so puts unnecessary stress on the machine and can cause oil leakage. Listen for excessive noise as the compressor operates; this is a clue that the air compressor is not level. Operating the machine on an uneven surface can also cause oil leaks.
-
5
Listen for knocks and loud noises, which may indicate that piston is not operating properly. Check the wrist pins and bearings for wear, and replace as needed.
-
6
Tighten belts and pulleys to the specifications recommended by the manufacturer. If a pulley, flywheel, belt, clamp, or guard is out of place or loose, the air compressor may not operate properly.
-
7
Look for excessive oil in the air output. While it's normal for some oil particulate to escape, excessive oil can damage pneumatic tools and can ruin a spray paint project. Make sure the filters are clean and that the piston rings are in good shape.
