How to Connect a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer

A Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer is an excellent addition to any personal computer. Each IntelliMouse has additional capabilities that are enabled by the Microsoft IntelliPoint software that comes with the mouse. Once installed, the IntelliMouse can become a user's best friend.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer mouse

Install the Software by CD

  • Insert the Microsoft IntelliPoint software CD intp your computer's CD-ROM drive.

  • If your operating system is Windows Vista or Windows 7 continue with this step. If you are using Windows XP, jump to the next step. Click "Start". In the "Start Search" box type "drive:\setup" where the word "drive" in the command is the letter of your CD-ROM drive. For example if your CD-Rom drive is letter "D," the command will be "d:\setup".

  • Click "Start" and then click "Run" to open the "Run" window. Type "drive:\setup" where the word "drive" in the command is the letter of your CD-Rom drive. For example if your CD-ROM drive is letter "D," the command will be "d:\setup".

  • Follow the directions to install the software on your computer.

  • Restart the computer.

Install the Software from the Internet

  • Click the "Microsoft Hardware: IntelliPoint Software Download" link in the Resources section below to download the software.

  • Select your product type in the available menus and click "Go."

  • Click the new link to download and save the software to your computer.

  • Navigate to the downloaded file and double-click the file to begin installation. Follow the instructions to install the software properly.

  • Restart the computer.

Connect a USB IntelliMouse

  • Remove the USB to PS2 connector if one is installed at the end of the cable.

  • Locate an empty USB port on your computer and plug in the mouse cable.

  • Follow the directions to install the mouse when the IntelliPoint software window opens.

Connect a PS2 style IntelliMouse

  • Turn off the computer.

  • Plug in the serial PS2 style connector into the square port on the back of the computer.

  • Boot up the computer into Windows.

  • Follow the directions to install the mouse when the IntelliPoint software window opens.

Connect a Wireless IntelliMouse

  • Install two new "AA" style batteries in the wireless mouse should they need replacing. If the mouse is new, replacing the batteries should not be required. Microsoft provides new batteries with each new IntelliMouse.

  • Plug in the USB wireless receiver into an available USB port on the computer.

  • Follow the directions to install the mouse when the IntelliPoint software window opens.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some newer computers do not have PS2 style ports, and a PS2 to USB converter must be utilized to allow your IntelliMouse to connect.
