How to Make a Gun Holder

Cool flintlock pistol

If you collect guns, then you know there are some that you just have to display in a certain manner. The holder should be large enough to keep the gun from falling, and small enough not to obscure the detail of the gun. Further, you don't want to damage the gun when you display it. A padded, elevated holder would be perfect for that gun.

Things You'll Need

  • Gun
  • Tape measure
  • Hand-held rotary filing tool such as a Dremel Tool
  • Wood saw
  • One 2-inch wood screw
  • 2-by-4 piece of wood of the correct length
  • 1-by-2 piece of wood of the correct length
  • Small piece of felt
  • Glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood stain
  • Varnish

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the total length of the gun, from the tip of the barrel to the very end of the butt. Add about an inch to either end.

    • 2

Measure the 2-by-4, to the same length as the step above and mark it. Then measure it again.

    • 3

Cut along the mark you made.

    • 4

Stand the gun on its handle. The barrel should be level with the table.

    • 5

Choose the best placement for the upright rest. This will be the point where the gun barrel will rest when it is in the holder.

    • 6

Measure the distance from the table to the bottom of the barrel. Add ½ inch to this.

    • 7

Measure the 1-by-2 to the length as the step above and mark it. Then measure it again.

    • 8

Cut along the mark you made.

    • 9

Center the gun on the 2-by-4, with the barrel parallel to the board. Place a mark on the board, at the point you identified as the best placement for the upright rest. Also, place a mark where the butt meets the board.

    • 10

Using the Dremel-type tool, cut out a "U" shape from the 2-inch side of the 1-by-2, just deep enough and wide enough to hold the gun barrel at the resting point.

    • 11

Attach the 1-by-2, with the U-shape cutout up, to the board where you made your mark, using the wood screw from the bottom.

    • 12

Use the sandpaper to sand any rough edges from the wood.

    • 13

      Apply stain, let it dry.

    • 14

Apply varnish to the entire project.

    • 15

Glue a piece of felt to the inside of the U and another on the board where the butt will go.

    • 16

Place the gun in the holder.

Tips & Warnings
