There are two ways to save a Microsoft Excel 97-2003 template as a Microsoft Excel 2007 template, depending on which version of Excel you have. If you have an Excel version before 2007, you can still download a compatibility pack from Microsoft that will let you work with the newer file formats.

      Open Excel. As it starts up, watch the splash screen and take note of the version year. If you are using Excel 2007, proceed to the next section. If you are using a version earlier than 2007, then proceed to Step 2.

      Download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and PowerPoint File Formats, found on the Microsoft Office website, if you are using Excel 2000 or 2003.

      Double-click on the file you've downloaded, and follow the instructions on your screen to finish the compatibility installation.

    Conversion

      Open the Microsoft Excel 97-2003 template that you wish to save as an Microsoft Excel 2007 template.

      Select "Save As."

      Click the drop-down arrow, next to the "Save As Type" dialog. Select "Excel Template" (for Microsoft Excel 2007 users) or "Excel 2007 Template" (for earlier versions).
