How to Get an Indiana Tax ID Number

Save

If you are starting a new business in India, you will need an Indiana tax ID number. You can obtain an Indiana tax ID online; just fill out an Online Business Tax Application BT-1 (see Resources). This form is used to register new businesses in Indiana for sales tax, withholding tax, food and beverage tax, and other taxes.

  • Get a Federal ID Number (FID/EIN) from the IRS. The second question of the BT-1 form asks for a valid FID/EIN number. Unless you are a sole proprietor or a limited liability corporation not registering for withholding tax, you need to get a FID/EIN. If you qualify for this exception, you must fill out a BT-1 form and mail it to the Indiana Department of Revenue: 100 N. Senate Ave. Indianapolis, IN 46204.

  • Gather the information you will require to fill in the online BT-1 form. This will include your business's legal name, contact name, daytime phone number, type of organization, Indiana Secretary of State Control number, mailing address, responsible officer information and other details (see Resource 2 for a comprehensive list).

  • Go to the Indiana Department of Revenue Online Business Tax Application BT-1 (see Resource) and click on the "start new" link at the bottom of the page.

  • Fill in the BT-1 form. Review the information you provided is accurate, and submit the form to the Indiana Department of Revenue. You will receive a confirmation email from the Indiana Department of Revenue within 72 hours. If your application is successful, you will receive your Indiana tax identification number.
