You can make additional, virtual backup copies of your DVDs by using some free backup software. Many of these programs are only usable on a trial or limited basis, but they are all still free. You can use such a program to create an ISO file, which is like a virtual image of your original DVD that you can later use to create that DVD again, or even just use it on your computer without having the original copy at all.

Instructions

    • 1

Try out Alcohol 120 for one program that can backup your DVDs free of charge. You'll only be able to use this program for 15 days before you have to purchase the full version, but it will allow you to backup your DVD files in a virtual format like ISO during that time. The program has good copying speeds and can copy virtually any kind of disc.

Use Easy DVD Shrink for free backup purposes. The program has a free week long trial that will allow you to do this. DVD Shrink preserves all aspects of your original DVD including the menus, subtitles and any other features it had. You'll have to purchase the full version after the first week, but it will work fine until then.

Use Magic ISO for a backup option that you can use for as long as you want. The free version of this software can only backup the first 300 MB of a file, but it's a good free option to use indefinitely if your file sizes are small.
