How to Make a Dresser Drawer Out of Cardboard
Furniture that is purchased in a store is typically created from wooden boards. The boards are constructed in a way that will allow the furniture to be used for years without becoming damaged or falling apart. To get an idea of how furniture makers create long-lasting items, it can be helpful to recreate a simple dresser drawer out of cardboard. Like the real thing, this drawer is measured, cut and constructed so that it will retain its shape for a long time.
Things You'll Need
- Cardboard, at least 24 inches wide
- Measuring tape
- Box cutter
- Hot glue gun

1
Measure the pieces of cardboard you will use to build your drawer: Place the cardboard onto a flat surface. Use the measuring tape to measure and draw 3 rectangles that each measure 24 inches wide by 8 inches high on its top surface. Measure and draw 2 additional rectangles that measure 8 inches wide by 8 inches high. Cut out all the pieces with scissors or a box cutter.

Place one of the 24-inch by 8-inch by 8-inch pieces onto a flat surface. Squeeze a line of hot glue along one of the 24-inch sides. Place the longest edge of another piece of the same dimension onto the glued edge at a 90-degree angle, matching sides. Hold the pieces together until the glue cools completely. Squeeze a line of hot glue along the other long side of the piece lying flat. Place the third piece of this dimension onto the glue, again matching long sides and holding it at a right angle. Hold the piece in place until it cools completely.

Squeeze a line of hot glue along the drawer's short, open edges one side, and press one of the 8-inch by 8-inch pieces of cardboard onto it, holding in place until the glue cools. Repeat on the other side. One side remains uncovered and the piece resembles a cubby. Fill the drawer with personal belongings or create several more, stacking them to create a "dresser."
