How to Search Texas Labor Laws
Texas labor laws provide information about the rights and responsibilities of workers and employers in Texas. If people have questions or concerns regarding such issues as payday, overtime, workplace safety and child labor laws, one of the first places to look is in the Texas Labor Code. The Code is organized by "Titles." Each title covers a specific topic (e.g., Title 2 contains laborer protection laws). Each title is broken down into sections. The Texas Labor Code is available over the Internet. You can also find it by visiting a public law library in Texas.

1
Broadly define what Texas labor law topic you want to find more information about. Topic ideas include labor laws regarding unions or labor organizations or laws concerning unemployment benefits in Texas.
-
2
Open the Table of Contents of the Texas Labor Code. If you are using the Internet, start at the page that lists each title and the chapters contained in each title (see Resource). Scan the TOC until you find the broad topic identified in Step 1. For example, if you wanted to look up unemployment laws, scanning the titles would lead you to Title 4, "Employment Services and Unemployment."
-
-
3
Read the chapter headings to help narrow your search. Using the unemployment example, narrow down what you want to learn about unemployment laws. For instance, if you needed your unemployment benefits extended, you would scan the chapter and find Chapter 209, "Extended Benefits."
-
4
Turn to the page containing the chapter you found in Step 3 (or click on the link to the chapter if you are using the Internet). Read the language in the statute. Repeat these steps if you did not find what you were looking for or if you need to find information about a different Texas labor law topic.
